Short answer: vibe coding with an AI app builder is a fast, cheap way to get the structure of an app: screens, forms, a first database. It is not enough to run a business on. Once real money, personal data and several user roles are involved, someone has to review the code, design who can see what, set up hosting, backups and monitoring, and test on real data. Skip that and the cheap prototype becomes the expensive incident.
What vibe coding is genuinely good at
We use AI coding tools every day. Describe a screen in plain English and you get a working page in minutes. For a business owner that is a real gift: you can show a developer exactly what you mean instead of writing a long brief, and test an idea before paying for it.
Lovable, Bolt, Cursor and Claude Code all do this well. If the goal is a mock-up, an internal tool for one person, or a landing page, a prompt can be enough. (We wrote about the website side of this in AI website builders: the craft still matters. This post is about apps.)
Where a prompt stops being enough
Think of it like a renovation. AI can draw the floor plan and put up the walls fast. It does not check the wiring, get the permits or make sure the door locks. A business app has the same hidden layer, and it is where things go wrong:
- Who sees what. In the Special Minds app, parents see their rate, tutors see their own pay and only admin sees margins. That split has to live in the database query. A prompted app usually hides numbers on the screen, and anything the screen fetched can still be read.
- Money that must add up. Invoices built from lessons, prepaid credits netted before payment, payouts that never go out twice. Each rule needs tests, not a vibe.
- Testing on real data, safely. We ran billing on the live system with emails allowlisted and payments in sandbox, so real parents were never charged by a test.
- The boring infrastructure. Backups, monitoring, logs, updates, a way to roll back. Nobody prompts for these, and you only notice them on the bad day.
- Review. AI writes code that looks right. Someone who knows what right looks like still has to read it, especially around logins and payments.
The hosting trap: easy now, expensive later
Most AI app builders deploy to managed platforms like Vercel, Supabase or Firebase. They are good products. On paper they look perfect: one click, scales forever, no server to manage.
The catch is that you pay for that convenience, and the bill grows with users, seats, traffic and function calls. Performance is not always better either: a small Singapore business with steady usage rarely needs global edge scaling, and data that sits in someone else's region or format is work to move later. Firebase in particular ties you to its own database style.
The alternative is not "do it all by hand". It is the right tools, owned by you: a server you control, an open-source deploy layer like Coolify, a standard PostgreSQL database, a CDN for files. That is what runs Special Minds, and our client apps typically cost from about SGD 100 a month to run, support included.
How we combine both
We are not anti vibe coding. It is how we build faster and charge less. The difference is what sits around it:
- You walk us through a normal week. We find the most expensive manual step.
- We use AI to build the structure quickly, then review every line that touches money, logins or private data.
- We deploy on infrastructure you own, with backups and monitoring from day one.
- You use phase 1 with real data. Then we quote the next phase, shaped by what daily use asks for.
That is how a platform agencies quote at SGD 20,000 and up lands at a fraction of that, without the shortcuts. More on pricing on our custom app development page.
FAQ
What is vibe coding?
Building software by describing what you want to an AI tool in plain language and accepting what it writes, often without reading the code. Tools like Lovable, Bolt, Cursor and Claude Code make it fast to get a working screen.
Can I build a business app with an AI app builder?
You can build a convincing prototype: screens, forms, a rough database. For an app that handles payments, personal data or several user roles, you still need someone to review the code, design the data and access rules, set up hosting, backups and monitoring, and test it on real data before it goes live.
Is Supabase, Firebase or Vercel a bad choice?
No. They are good products and a fair pick for a prototype or a funded team. The trade-off is that you pay for convenience: pricing grows with usage, seats and traffic, your data sits in their setup, and moving out later takes work. For a small business with steady usage, a well-run server you own is often cheaper and just as fast.
How much does it cost to run a custom app in Singapore?
Our own builds run from about SGD 100 a month for hosting, backups, monitoring and support, on infrastructure the client owns. The build itself is paid in phases, from SGD 2,000 for the first phase.
